Mirai Nagasu Editorial Feature Spread
The project was to create one 4–page feature story (two spreads). We were to choose content expressing a personal interest or area of expertise. A topic that I’ve wanted to use for quite some time was figure skating. I started skating when I was four years old and it has played a huge role in my life. It's a passion of mine and I thought the topic would work quite well for this particular assignment. Mirai Nagasu was the first US woman to land a triple axel in PyeongCheng at the Olympics in 2018 and she was the third woman ever to land one at the Olympics. I used an article that Angela Bao wrote based off of an interview with Mirai which discusses her struggles, triumphs, and how she is breaking barriers both on and off the ice. Figure skating is a dynamic sport, with a lot of movement and I wanted to reflect that in the design of my spreads. The addition of the triangles in my design added a dynamic touch to the spreads. The way that the triangles are arranged interacts with the photos of Nagasu, which implies fractures or fractals and gives a more literal meaning to the title "breaking boundaries on and off the ice." There are also many triangles that are notable in figure skating, many of which are present in the body movement and the shape that the body creates while skating.
